On liberation teaching and children
[#quoteoftheday: bundle edition] "In a healthy society, the teaching function belongs to everyone." - John Taylor Gatto. The full quote reads: “Is it any wonder that Socrates was outraged at the accusation he took money to teach? Even then, philosophers saw clearly the inevitable direction the professionalisation of teaching would take, that of pre-empting the teaching function, which, in a healthy community, belongs to everyone.”.
I thought this quote - and the related two others - were helpful in spotlighting a possible reason why things can be so difficult for teachers.
In a healthy community, there are shared principles and values and everyone assumes the responsibility and qualities and functions of a teacher. Everyone.
Many societies and communities today aren't so healthy.
And so it's a tall order if you, as a teacher, are the only one held accountable for instilling values in learners, addressing their social emotional needs, guiding them through an exams system, and all while navigating hierarchies and bureaucracy on top of that.
I draw a link to some other quotes and images that I found resonate with this idea - a mini bundle to ponder.
Until we're all ok, no one is really ok. Especially not the children. (It's still not ok). ❤️🩹
